I have had not only a lot of leakage but even squirting from my stoma. I had only mild IBS before RC, but perhaps after all that has happened in rearranging things, it has gone into overdrive. I have an Indiana pouch.

Ginger, Back in the dark ages when I was in college they required we take a relaxation course. Everyone laughed at the idea. Now I appreciate the wisdom of learning some relaxation techniques. It looks like they need to teach it in middle school. The exercises will help. Julie

The Cleveland Clinic advised that Kenzie falls into that group of kids that at 12 they have the same make up, over achievers, perfectionists, and so on. If they eat certain foods they have blood in there stool, so diet is also to be looked at. She may have to give up dairy etc. Of course she told me every word he said and probably can repeat at any time. Boy, when I was 12 all I hoped for was that SISTER MARY ARELIA DIDN’T SMACK ME AGAIN, THESE KIDS THESE DAYS, SHE ALSO HAS TO DO RELAXATION EXERCISES..I am very glad it wasn’t anything more serious, crones etc.

Ginger, I took a probiotic tablet that was supposed to contain live cultures to help keep good bacteria in my gut. I don’t remember where I had read about them. I finally decided to stick with yogurt with live cultures preferably with no additives. I would buy Nancy’s or Mountain High until we got a Trader Joe’s here in Tucson. I like their Greek Style yogurt and it has several strains.
The idea is if you have sufficient ‘good’ bacteria then the ‘bad’ bacteria can’t get a foothold in the digestive tract.
The article’s Pat referenced were interesting and suggest that probiotics would be useful to keep the urinary tract healthy also.Several people on the Bladder Cancer Cafe email list report they use Culturelle which is brand name for a probiotic.
Pat, my daughter is allergic to corn also and has IBS. I swear that popcorn set off my diverticulitis and I won’t eat it.Julie

ABLSCYa know Ginger i’ve been thinking ..i know a rarity…..but i’m sure they would have diagnosed me with IBS when i was 9 yrs old if they even knew about IBS then. It only took me 30 yrs to figure out i was allergic to corn…popcorn…any corn anything. I remember getting the attacks at school..being sent home…and then only to feel better and everyone thought i was faking it. Then they said it was pre-pubescent..and then it was hormonal…and then i needed a psychiatrist. It was just corn and fatty foods. I think there are a lot of food allergies out there that parents don’t think about. You just kind of have to keep a diary of what you are eating and when the attacks come..usually you and not a doc will figure it out. Like i said…i was a little slow…i kept having attacks after going to a movie and eating popcorn…finally a light bulb went off…and its usually within a 4 to 8 hr period of eating the related food. ( it is my gallbladder going into spasms that are just horrible and only get worse with age..but they didn’t have a test for that either)…come to think of it i even missed out on PMS….they named that after i was done with it…makes me feel like a pioneer of sorts!! ;) Pat

jULIE, PROBOTICS IS USED TO REGULATE IbS,, but I read on the C-dif support group those with c-dif have also gone that way to prevent any irritation by foods that could contribute to c-dif, or cause a home for bacteria to grow, in the colon intestine etc. I just starting reading about it as I said my grand daughter has IBS,
after weeks of testing she to went to the CLEVELAND CLINIC,,,she was checked for chrones disease, and other possibles. So its IBS,, DIET TO CONTROL IT AND SOME COUNCELING AS SHE IS A OVER ACHIEVER…what do you know about probotics../???GINGER

I am learning alot about ibs, my grand daughter was just diagnosed, she is 12,have you heard of probotics,,,google it it tells all about how to avoid it..and I am to since I had C-dif from an anti-biotic..My Kenzie is an over achiever, she has created this ibs in her system which means stress you put on yourself can make you sick, and the combination of your amke-up as well..Ginger

Thats interesting Kathy..having IBS and then having a pouch made from the irritable colon…would it maintain a memory and decide to be a irritable pouch?…Since they have no idea what causes IBS or they would have eliminated it by now. But i and others will tell you that it takes a while for your new pouch to accept the idea that it is now a bladder…if you are having spasms in your bowel from something its a good bet Mr. Pouch or Ms. Pouch will decide to join in the fun and contract also. This lessens with time but there are still things that will send my pouch into spasms…for instance every time i have a CT scan..don’t know if its the dye or the barium…but my pouch doesn’t like it. I weaned off all caffeine products. But everyone is different. It takes some time for the pouch to get to capacity and with the amount of liquids you take in it will signal you to empty…loud and clear..and if you don’t listen it will become Mt. Etna….
Hope things calm down….PatKathyk

Im sorry. I didn’t do a very good job of phrasing my question. I have been having trouble with my new pouch (from a bowel section) and wondered if some of that could be related to my previously existing IBS (which I have had for years, but a mild case). I assume that it would travel with the bowel to its new site. I have been on medicine to calm my pouch which is for bowel spasms. Since that can cause constipation in my “real” bowels I have been taking stool softeners and taking fiber and haven’t had many IBS problems there. At first I too had some serious hard and painful bowel movements, to the point of bleeding.
I just wondered if there was any connection with IBS and problems with my new pouch. Thanks for all of your replies!

I had problems the first few months…hard bowel movements…those intestines were not happy…had to do something.. I take at least one capsule of fish oil a day (amega fatty acids), sometimes two if I feel backed up…and make sure I drink at least 12 ounces of some type of cranberry juice, crangrape or cranrasberry daily.
Also have added more fiber to my diet and try to eat lots of fruit & salads. MelodieMelodie, Indy Pouch, U.W.Medical Center, Seattle, Dr. Paul H. Lange & Jonathan L. Wright
