Just over a year ago, Ochsner Health, in partnership with Xavier University of Louisiana, announced our plans for a new historically black college and university (HBCU) medical school in Louisiana to help address physician shortages and give more career opportunities to underrepresented students, helping to improve health outcomes for patients and community members across our region.Today, on April 29, we shared our continued progress in launching the transformational Xavier Ochsner College of Medicine (XOCOM).Through the establishment of XOCOM, Xavier and Ochsner aspire to redefine the landscape of medicine by training new physicians who authentically mirror the communities they serve. Slated to be the only HBCU medical school in the Gulf South when it opens, XOCOM expands opportunities for New Orleans’ downtown area as part of the BioDistrict, a development district growing biosciences and the local economy. As XOCOM advances healthcare equity and expands the physician workforce in the Gulf South, the medical school will also help the BioDistrict lead the region in healthcare excellence and promote inclusive, equitable job growth. At themomentousXOCOM signing celebration, Xavier and Ochsner officialsproudlyannounced that Leonardo Seoane M.D., F.A.C.P., executive vice president and chief academic officer of Ochsner Health, will serve as the new HBCU medical school’s founding dean. Xavier University of Louisiana will seek approval from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, which is expected to take about three years, followed by recruitment.XOCOM aims to seat 50 students in the first class, and the medical school will continue to grow as it develops.Thank you to all who have made XOCOM possible, including the Xavier University of Louisiana Board of Trustees, the Ochsner Health Board of Directors, and local and state officials. We are excited to announce a new surgical innovation at the Ochsner Health Neuroscience Institute! Ochsner is the first healthcare organization in Louisiana and the Gulf Coast region to use the xvision Spine System, an augmented reality (AR) navigation system for spinal operations. This technology gives surgeons "x-ray vision" to navigate instruments and implants accurately during spine surgery. On June 20, the neurosurgery team at Ochsner Medical Center - New Orleans used the technology for the first time. Cuong "C.J." Bui, MD, FAANS, neurosurgery system chair, said, "The xvision Spine System is a real innovation for patients and surgeons. This really is X-ray vision. It's a game-changer for spine surgery and we are very excited to offer it to our patients." The xvision Spine System has treated over 6,000 patients across 23 states.

Spreading community love and care at Zeus’ Rescues with the Ochsner Health digital marketing team 🐶🐱. The digital marketing team recently spent a day at Zeus’ Rescues helping out some furry friends. Zeus’ Rescues is an organization committed to ending pet homelessness and euthanasia in the New Orleans area. Volunteers rolled up their sleeves to paint fences and give baths to these adorable animals awaiting their forever homes. Every wagging tail put a smile on the team’s faces. Thank you to the digital marketing team who volunteered and made a positive impact! #OchsnerServes

Today is Juneteenth, a day on which we remember the emancipation of enslaved people in America over 150 years ago on June 19, 1865. In honor of this significant event, our employee resource group, African Americans Building and Leading Equity (ABLE), hosted celebrations at various campuses. Pictured are team members at Ochsner Medical Center – West Bank, where employees engaged with informational displays, historical games and special treats.
