Setting at rest all question as to what is to be done with the Eighthstreet viaduct, County' Commissioner Clifford Brown issued the following statement yesterday: "Although Mayor Seasongood has stated publicly, in my presence, that in his opinion 8 new Eighth-street viaduct would not be built; and, although the Mayor 1 insists the present old worn-out and dilapidated viaduct, which interferes with railroad terminal development, be repaired at a cost of about $400,000, which would be practically wasted, the County Commissioners are proceeding, with all possible speed, with the plans for' a new concrete viaduct to cost about $2,000,000. "The city of Cincinnati built the viaduct and was responsible for it during all the years until August 26, 1925; the city permitted it to get into its present deplorable condition.

On August 26, 1925, the city, to escape further, Director responsibility, declare had the the viaduct State a part of Intercounty Highway No. 7, this making the county responsible from that date. "Although this transfer was made A little more than a year ago, the Commissioners, who have kept the roadway in repair, have conferred with the railroad and terminal interests and have located and platted all land to be appropriated, and the Surveyor has been giving it such attention that he will have the plans ready for submission to the Commissioners January 1, 1927. "If a new viaduct is not under construction in 1927, it will not be the fault of the County Commissioners. It is foolish to think of trying to repair the present structure, for it merely would be a waste of money if the plans for the new railroad terminals are to be considered, as to construct terminals it will be absolutely necessary to raise the new viaduct 12 feet above the height of the present structure, or the terminal project must be abandoned." Commissioner Brown further said that contrary to reports, the city authorities have been consulted by the Commisioners from time to time regarding what they propose to do.

He also made it clear that the county not anxious to have control of the Eighth street viaduct, but if it must have, then the County Commissioners will adopt plans intended for the best interests of the taxpayers, which, in his opinion, call for a new viaduct and not an attempt to repair the present structure, which would be a waste of money, in the opinion of the Commissioners.
