SPORTS BRIEFS World Basketball ceases operations FROM WIRE REPORTS The World Basketball League announced yesterday that it would suspend all operations immediately.

"We regret this tough decision," said President John F. Geletka. He said the decision to fold was made Friday night in a conference call involving the professional league and owners from Halifax, Hamilton, Saskatchewan, Winnipeg and Youngstown. Geletka said the decision was necessary after three franchises closed earlier this year and after the Dayton Wings announced plans Friday to stop operations. Utah Jazz reserve center Mike Brown may be required to pay a precedent-setting amount in child support dating to 1986 as the result of a paternity suit filed by his daughter's mother.

Third District Judge Timothy R. Hanson in Salt Lake City will rule on how much support Brown must pay for his 9-year-old daughter living in Maryland.
