TEFAF Maastricht 2024 took place on March 8-14, 2024 at the MECC Forum in Maastricht, the Netherlands.

The name TEFAF refers to the organizer – The European Fine Art Foundation. The fair has been held since 1988. TEFAF is considered one of the most significant art fairs in the world. The presentation includes works of art and collectables from ancient times to the present day. According to the organizer’s motto, you can see objects documenting 7,000 years of human history. The presented works constitute the offer of exhibitors participating in the fair.

Over 260 prestigious exhibitors from over 20 countries were present at the fair. Individual sections showed a variety of works of art, such as paintings, antiques, classic works of art, contemporary art, photography, jewellery, 20th-century interior design and work on paper.

In addition to the exhibition section, there are also industry meetings and lectures devoted to, among others: changes in the art market, threats to the historical heritage and methods of conserving works of art.

The 38th edition of TEFAF – The European Fine Art Fair took place in Maastricht. This is one of the most important events in the international art market. The presentations of nearly three hundred galleries covered 7,000 years of art history from prehistory to the present day. The presented objects included paintings – ancient and modern, sculpture, design, and jewellery. Including a few Polish threads.

TEFAF is reknown as an important event for museum professionals looking for the most interesting objects for their collections. This year’s edition was attended by representatives of over 300 museums, including the National Gallery, Musée d’Orsay, Prado, MoMA and Met from New York, Zayed National Museum Abu Dhabi and M+ from Hong Kong. Over 600 curators were accredited for the opening. This is what makes this event unique.

Art dealers from almost all over the world take part in the latest editions – since TEFAF is also held in New York, this event has become additional, significant internationalization. The 272 art dealers and antique dealers present at the fair come from 22 countries – including France, Belgium, Switzerland, Great Britain, the United States, and South Korea. This year’s section presenting new galleries included the Olszewski i Ciacek gallery, winning the JP Morgan award for the best exhibition. For the first time this year, a Focus section was offered with exhibitions focusing on specific themes in art.

There were spectacular sales during the fair. An American dealer, MS Rau, sold a painting by Vincent van Gogh to the collection of a private museum outside Europe. “Tête de Paysanne à la Coiffe Blanche” (“Head of a peasant woman in a white bonnet”). Thanks to funds from the “Women of the Rijksmuseum”, the only signed painting by Gesina ter Borch, a 17th-century Dutch painter, was added to the Rijksmuseum collection. The exhibited works included objects by Damien Hisrt, serigraphs by Andy Warhol, drawings, paintings and ceramics by Picasso, collages and drawings by Matisse, nudes by Amedeo Modigliani, Gust Klimt, Egon Schiele and paintings by Andre Derain and Gerhard Richter. A painting with a series of self-portraits by Roman Opałka and two paintings by Mela Muter were also shown.

The exhibition was accompanied by additional events: lectures titled TEFAF Talks connecting the worlds of art, business and collecting, as well as a series of meetings on the protection of cultural heritage.
